This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in Bristol, England, he is an essential link between the British and American concepts of the picturesque. He was a merchant and engraver and came to Charles Town (Charleston), South Carolina as a young man in 1769. Self- taught, he advertised his merchant and engraving services. He then studied painting with Henry Benbridge.
Coram's sketchbooks includes plantation and other rural landscape views, richly painted in oil tones of green, blue, gold and pink. His paintings combine accuracy with a dreamy, poetic atmosphere that was the romantic legacy of Thomas Gainsborough. |
