This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Tyson Grumm grew up in Albany, Oregon.  He had two interests as a child---basketball and drawing.  He earned basketball scholarships, which brought him to Southern Oregon University where he earned a bachelor's degree in fine art in 1996.

After graduation and a job at National Car Rental, Grumm joined Oregon's Blackfish Gallery in Portland.  An artist cooperative, Grumm paid $40 a month to be in the gallery and share in the work of running it.

Grumm does not plan a painting before he creates it.  Instead he paints a traditional landscape then covers it up and adds to it.  Grumm repeats this process over and over adding nonsensical objects to the work.  This process let's him continually add to the work and it adds a sense of mystery to the piece. Though viewers assume objects are in the painting for a reason, often they are not.  Grumm only uses acrylic paints so that he can work in multiple layers.
