This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Portrait and genre painter Walter Gould was born in 1829 in Philadelphia, where he studied with the famous portrait painter Thomas Sully, and with John Rubens Smith. Gould was a talented youth. He exhibited at the Philadelphia Artists' Fund Society when he was barely in his teens. He also later studied in Paris.

When he moved to Italy in 1849 as a young man, age twenty, Gould could not have known that he would live there for the rest of his life, dying forty-four years later in Florence in 1893.

With Italy as his home base, he traveled extensively, painting in the East. He painted portraits of English Ambassador Sir Strafford Canning and the Grand Vizier, Raschid Pasha while in Constantinople. Some earlier portraits include those of Louis Kossuth and his associates. Kossuth was the Governor of Hungary who was in prison in Asia Minor in 1851.

War, while obviously devastating to human life, is also often destructive to art. Gould had to deal with the loss, during the Civil War, of most of his early Virginia and Pennsylvania portraits. His portrait of Louis Kossuth may be seen in Philadelphia at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Walter Gould was a member of the Philadelphia Artists' Fund Society.
