Biography from Morris & Whiteside Galleries:
Closely associated in his oil painting with Hilton Head Island, Walter Greer is the first artist to have made the island his permanent residence.  He has lived here since 1960 and spends much of his time in the woods, beaches, and marshes which he depicts in his signature "pond series."

Greer is a native South Carolinian and earned a B.S. from The Citadel in 1942, and a B.S. from Clemson University.  In 1960, he studied at the Atlanta School of Art with Ben Shute.  In New York City, he attended the National Academy of Design as a student of Robert Phillipp.

He has exhibited widely throughout the Southeast.  In 1996, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton Head Island named its art exhibition hall the Walter Greer Gallery in his honor.

His commissioned works include paintings in the South Carolina Governor's Mansion and a board-room portrait of the President of Emory University.  Among many private and public collections, the Gibbes Museum in Charleston, the Telfair of Savannah and the Greenville County Museum include his works. Corporate collections include major works for Simmons' World Headquarters in Atlanta.
