| Born in Jackson, MI on Sept. 14, 1911. Gates grew up in Jackson, and studied at the Cleveland (OH) Art Institute. After serving in WWII, he moved tonorthern California. For thirty years he taught art at San Jose State College. Retiring in 1976, he moved nearby to Santa Cruz where he continued to paint until his death on Jan. 29, 2000. His work includes hundreds of landscapes and portraits.
