Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, William Gleason trained as a ship carver in his father's firm of Samuel W. Gleason and Sons. William earned early recognition for his carved, gilded hound on Staghound, the clipper ship that builder McKay considered his prize of the fleet.
Gleason established his own shop on Lewis's Wharf in 1852, and also continued to work with the family firm. He was a carver of furniture, and turned to this business completely when the shipbuilding (showing 500 of 1258 characters). |
