| Born in Canada on Nov. 29, 1888. Gledhill settled in Santa Barbara, CA in 1905. In 1907 he married photographer Carolyn Even; after her death he wed Andriette Bowen, a former opera star. As a portraitist, he painted Robert Louis Stevenson, Ed Borein, and other notables. As well as an artist, he was a leader in historical preservation. As such, he wrote El Pueblo Viejo, an ordinance which protects local adobes. He became director of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum and served as curator (showing 500 of 728 characters). |
