| | Born in Scotland on May 18, 1896. Gillies became a citizen of the United States in 1912. By 1920 he was a resident of Oakland and in 1924 he was a pupil at the California School of Fine Arts. At that school he won a scholarship for further study at the Art Students League in New York City. During 1935-36 he lived in Los Angeles and taught at Chouinard School of Art. He was in the West Indies at the time of his death in October 1976.
