Landscape, portrait, and miniature painter, William Groombridge was one of the earliest academically-trained landscape painters in America. From 1773 to about 1790 he was in Kent and London active as a landscape and portrait painter. He arrived in Philadelphia by 1794 and made his home there until 1804, when he moved to Baltimore. He produced some of the first "pure" landscape paintings in America, at a time when most artists were doing portrait commissions for income.
