| Born in San Francisco, CA on Jan. 28, 1868. Gerstle was a prominent businessman and patron of the arts. In his leisure he studied painting at the CSFA and the ASL in NYC while maintaining a studio in San Francisco at 716 Montgomery Street. His subjects include interiors, landscapes, and portraits. He was a generous benefactor and treasurer of the SFMA and the San Francisco Art Institute until his death in his native city on Aug. 6, 1947.
