William S Gillies' best known works were cover art for Ken Holt Mysteries, Nancy Drew Mysteries, Hardy Boys Mysteries, Colliers Magazine and Saturday Home Magazine (during the 40's). He also designed the lettering font "Gillies Gothic".

Gillies was one of the original members of the Westport Artists (in Connecticut) in the 50s. He also established the Portrait Group of Westport, Connecticut.

William Gillies did cover jacket work in New York City while living in Westport, Connecticut. He then moved to Hilton Head and specialized in animal portraits (horses and dogs). He eventually painted wild life especially birds. The artist also painted several landscape scenes around Hilton Head Island.

Gillies painted portraits throughout his lifetime. His most famous commission was for William T. Piper, president of Piper Aircraft Corporation.
