This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Folk artist (Samuel) Wood Gaylor was born in 1883 and died in 1957.  Papers of writer and editor Jean Lipman in the Art Archives of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., relate to an article by her on Wood Gaylor.  He had a show, "Paintings and Drawings by Wood Gaylor", at the Thumb Box Gallery, in New York City, in 1915 and 1916, and New York galleries continue to handle his work.

In 2002, Wood Gaylor had a painting of artist Kenneth Hayes Miller's birthday party. in the show "Living with Art: Early American Modernism from the Baker/Pisano Collection of the Heckscher Museum of Art".

According to artist Louis Bouche, in an oral history interview in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Wood Gaylor was a member of the Penguin sketch club on Fifteenth Street between Union Square and Fifth Avenue, in New York City.  It was organized in 1916 by painter Walt Kuhn who had been one of the guiding lights of the Armory Show in 1913, in which Gaylor also participated.  The Penguin dissolved in the early 1920s.

The Art Archives of the Smithsonian also contain black and white photos of two Wood Gaylor paintings, which were clowns and a complex circus scene.

Gaylor married Adelaide Lawson, sister of a playwright.
