| Born in Germany on Jan. 18, 1876. Harms studied on scholarship at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. After settling in San Francisco in 1911, he was naturalized in 1917. The next year he was arrested for failing to register for the draft. Due to the incident he lost his position at UC Berkely. His pro-German sentiments kept him poverty stricken during that time.
