This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Genre and portrait painter, Anton Hohenstein was born in Bavaria and came to America in the early to mid-1850s. He worked in Philadelphia, was active in New York City, 1859; and Hoboken, NJ, 1872. It is believed that around 1859 or 1860 Hohenstein apparently changed his name to Anthony Hochstein. The second name appears in PAFA exhibition records for 1865 and appears again in National Academy of Design exhibition records of 1872. Hohenstein painted a portrait of U.S. Grant in 1867.
