Arthur Van Hecke, was born in Roubaix, France in 1924 to a family of laboreres. He grew up in Brugge, Belgium, but returned with his family to Roubaix where he attended school.

Arthur Van Hecke started painting in 1945. Although he considers himself completely self-taught, he was greatly influenced by the works of Matisse, Picasso, Nicolas de Staell, Braque, Leger, and other contemporaries.

Edouard Pignon, was not only a close personal friend, but also a great influence in Van Hecke's work.

In 1948 Van Hecke was awarded a first prize at an invitational exhibit in Roubaix. Shortly after that event, he dedicated his life totally and exclusively to painting.

Arthur Van Hecke has since had more than fifty one-man shows in Europe, several group exhibits, and has been admitted to several museums.

Van Hecke is considered to be a painter of the French School. He has been the subject of two books - Contemporary Painters (Mazenod, Paris, 1964), and Arthur Van Hecke (Tuffier, Paris, 1991).

In 1998, Van Hecke was honored with a lifetime retrospective exhibition at the National Museum of Dunkerque, France.
