Successor to Constance Fowler as Head of the Art Department at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, he became one of the Oregon regionalist painters inspired by Harry Wentz. He had a forty-year "plus" career as educator and artistic interpreter of the Northwest Coast, and in recognition of his distinction, the Hallie Ford Museum at Willamette has the Carl Hall Gallery, devoted to permanent exhibits of Northwest art.
