| | Born in Peace Dale, RI on June 10, 1856. Caroline’s parents build Mission Hill on the back of the old mission at Santa Barbara in 1885. During 1888-89 she traveled by horse and buggy on a painting tour of the missions. Later in life she was president of Wellesley College for 21 years. As well as an artist and educator, she was the author of Pilgrimage to the Holy Land and books of poetry and biographies. A wealthy and generous benefactor, she died in Santa Barbara, CA on March 19, 1945.
