This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in San Francisco into a prominent family, Catherine Hittell was a painter who studied at the School of Design with Virgil Williams after graduating from the University of California at Berkeley in 1882. She also became a strong conservationist, focused on preserving the Calaveras Big Trees.

Catherine Hittell was raised in the family mansion at 808 Turk Streetand lived there her entire life. For many years, it was a gathering place for prominent citizens of San Francisco. Her father, Theodore Hittell, was a prominent lawyer and respected historian who was the author of a four volume "History of California". The parents created a culturally stimulating environment for Catherine and her artist brother Charles and another brother, Franklin, including providing them with drawing lessons as children. A portrait by Charles of the father is in the California Historical Society.
