This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Charles Allen Hulbert   (1859 - 1939)

"Charles A. Hulbert is a native of Mackinac Island, but when quite young his parents moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he received his first instruction in drawing.  About six years ago Mr. Hulbert entered the Pennsylvania Academy of Design, where he remained three years.  Then he went to New York, where he remained a year as a member of the senior class in the Metropolitan Art Academy School, with John Ward Stimson as his tutor.  Mr. Hulbert has been a resident of Detroit but a short time but the pictures he has exhibited demonstrate his possesion of true art feeling and good ability."

"Detroit's Art Colony,"  Detroit Free Press, February 17, 1889

Further note: According to the 1860 Census, he was born on Mackinac Island in 1859.  His parents were William and Mary Ann Hulbert.  His father was listed as a merchant on the island.  By 1880 the family is living in Erie, Pennsylvania and Charles is working as a railroad clerk.  In the 1910 Census, the artist is listed as living in Egremont, Massachusetts, with his wife Catherine; she is also listed as an artist.  By 1920 they have moved on to Brooklyn, New York.

According to the American Art Directory, Volume #14:  Charles Allen Hulbert also attended the Artist-Artisan Institute in New York (founded by John Ward Stimson) and was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the Society of Independent Artists and the Brooklyn Society of Artists.
