| Portrait and figure painter, Charles Hine was born in Bethany, Connecticut and grew up in New Haven. He began to study art under George W. Flagg at the age of 15, later in Hartford under Jared B. Flagg and two years of panting in Derby, Connecticut.
In 1846 the artist returned to New Haven and remained there for the next decade. In 1857 he moved to New York City. He was best know for his nude figure entitled "Sleep", it was considered his best work.
