| | Born in Leeds, England on June 7, 1808. Hopps came to the U.S. in 1826 and settled in Boston. He was a resident of San Francisco by 1851. He worked as a house, sign, and decorative painter and later operated an art supply and frame shop on Montgomery Street. He died in Alameda, CA on Dec. 20, 1890. His painting Celebration of the Admission of California into the Union was loaned to the exhibition held at the Mark Hopkins Institute in 1900. Exh: SFAA, 1873; Mechanics' Inst.
