| Known for his historical portraits, Hampton was an African-American artist born circa 1880 in Ohio. He lived and worked in Cincinnati, and in 1897 the Cincinnati Enquirer wrote that he intended to complete a course in the Art School and then go to Europe. There he wanted to make a name for himself much like Ira Aldridge and Edmonia Lewis. Source: Garth's Art and Antiques
