Biography from InSight Gallery:
Clint Herring's art is an impassioned body of work.  In the medium of transparent watercolor he strives to unveil the essence and aura of his subjects.  At an early age, Herring demonstrated a natural talent for drawing.  He was introduced to watercolor in his early teens.  Through the years he has won many state and regional art awards.

Herring attended Auburn University in the early eighties majoring in visual arts.  After his university studies his artwork was exhibited individually.  He has also held the position of art director with a local design firm.

The majority of Herring's time is spent painting and exploring the watercolor medium; he has immersed himself in his work and to that end is well versed in contemporary American realism.  His most recent works have been painted in a freer manner born of a newfound confidence and a sincere interest in seeing how far he can take his talent and his art.  Clint presently resides in Auburn, Alabama with his wife, Cristen, and daughters, Cara and Cate.

Artist's statement:
My work, which is primarily in the medium of transparent watercolor, depicts the unspoiled essence of the subject and the intense emotion it stirs in me.  A resigned wisdom, solitude, and lack of worldly things are embodied in my subject matter.  It is not only the initial visual attraction, but also the characteristic and mood of the subject that I try to share with the audience.

There are many strong elements in my work, most notably my blending of chiaroscuro and precise visual detail.  I embrace the realist approach in terms of content.  Rather than extensive broad washes, I generally incorporate a more non-traditional, controlled feel to my work.

Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth are two artists who have most strongly influenced me.  I admire the strong, yet simple, compositions of Hopper's work.  In terms of the handling and mastery of the medium, I have high regard for Wyeth.  I find that although no figure may be present in the piece, a life presence can often be felt in Wyeth and Hopper's work.

My recent works capture moments and scenes of everyday life.  I am motivated to portray a subject's essence and aura.  Within that aura I find isolation, innocence, and a spiritual element, a sense of the old and the emergence of the new.  My painting melds together a sense of spirituality and light.  Hence, the infusion and recording of light and dark.
I concur with Wyeth who stated, "One's art goes only as deep as one's love."  To create a lasting and visually alluring piece of work, I reveal to the viewer the essential character or mood of the subject in the same way I was initially awed.
