A sculptor of clay and metal figures that are distinctive for their smokey surface effects, Darrin Hallowell works from a studio in Chicago. He has devoted much of his time in the late 1990s and early 2000s to his "Excavation Series," enigmatic depictions of the human form, made from clay specially mixed by himself. After the initial firing, he puts the pieces in a pit fire to achieve the smokey look, and frequently fractures them even further to reassemble into another human form.
