The following information was submitted in June of 2006 by Eduardo Alicea:
Delmas Howe who is now 70 years old spent his childhood in southern New Mexico, in the town of Truth and Consequences. The household in which he was raised was filled with Sierra County ranch people of the day and the memories of the real cowboys, animals and lifestyles stick with him.
After graduation from high school he progressed through undergraduate work at Wichita State University, then four years in the Air Force Band at the Air Force Academy, a move to the East Coast, classes at Yale University and several years of classes in NYC at the Art Students’ League and the School of Visual Arts while working as a professional musician. After a return to the West and a successful design studio in Amarillo, Texas he returned to Truth or Consequences to care for his aging parents while taking advantage of the opportunity to reflect on his youthful experiences and what he experienced “out in the world”. The result has been an ongoing juxtaposition of universal symbols and southwestern iconography discussing world themes that are being show in major museums around the world and discussed in important books about art history.
Upon his return he began realizing it was time for his community to start developing culturally. To this day he is involved with creative ways to make the arts grow in and around Sierra County. He started the Arts Council, worked as an active member of the museum board, created murals on city buildings himself and helped find grants to pay for others. One big project was his instigating the cities participation in the State Highway Project of public art commissions celebrating the Camino Real. The result was the very visible downtown fountain as a matter of fact there is hardly a spot in downtown T. or C. that if you stand you can’t see some project that Delmas either did himself or instigated.
Currently he is developing the plan to extend the New Mexico Cultural Affairs Dept. to Southern New Mexico by opening some venue in T. or C. in which to display artifacts that are now in storage from the six or so different state museums.
The Sierra County Arts Council that Delmas was instrumental in creating has developed, with his participation, many youth programs in the whole spectrum of the arts. For five years he and a musician from the San Antonia Symphony, Ted Alred, developed a chamber music festival in the summer that was very successful and which was the inspiration for music festivals of all kinds the continue today.
Because of people like Delmas the city of Truth or Consequences is developing a new profile that includes a viable art scene. As the city grows, and it is really beginning to, it appears that the arts are going to play a very important part. We will be thankful to people like Delmas Howe.
