Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, Donald Hickman paints portraits, still lifes, and western subjects in trompe l'oeil style.
Upon graduation from Vesper George Art School in Boston, he won a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship. He studied with Hobart Nichols at Oyster Bar, Long Island. Studied two summers in Provincetown, on Cape Cod, with John Fraser of the Rhode Island School of Design and with Henry Hensche of the Pennsylvania Academy.
