This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A native of South Dakota, Hlavka developed an early passion and natural ability for sculpture. While still in grade school his work was included in the "South Dakota Outstanding Young Artists Traveling Exhibition". As a teenager, he toured Italy and was influenced by the works of the Renaissance masters. After attending the College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, he continued to hone his skills with various classes and workshops including a study of portrait and figurative realism under the direction of Martine Vaugel, a noted sculptor in France.

Hlavka's work has been exhibited at prestigious national shows including the National Sculpture Society's "Masquerade Exhibition" at the Tower of the Americas in New York and Cheyenne's Old West Museum Show, for which he received the "Gallery's Choice" award. Other awards include a Members and Associated Award from Allied Artist of America. His work can be found in galleries and private collections across the nation. Hlavka's most recent commissions for life-size and heroic bronzes include: President George H. Bush, President Thomas Jefferson, Colonel Sturgis mounted on his horse, Christ with two children, and the Sundance Kid. All life-size works to be completed in the next year. Hlavka is one or the newest professional members to be elected to the National Sculpture Society.

Often called one of the country's most prolific sculptors, Hlavka's work ranges from Wildlife to Western to Portraiture, though he is best known for his ability to bring a smile to the viewers face with the whimsical portrayal of the characters he creates. Hlavka resides in St. George, Utah with his wife and two daughters.

Biography from Pitzer's Fine Arts:
A sculptor with bronze, Edward Hlavka's work includes figurative subjects of historical, political, wildlife, western, religious and ethnic themes.  He has completed many monumental commissions through his career encompassing these subjects.  His ability to portray characterizations is related to his focus on exactness of detail, whimsy and grace of design.

As a native of South Dakota, now living in Utah, the artist developed an early passion and natural ability for three-dimensional art and working in clay.  Even while in grade school, he did work included in a South Dakota Outstanding Young Artist traveling exhibition.  During his teen years he was fortunate to tour Italy and was greatly influenced by the works of the Renaissance masters and later returned to study figurative sculpture in France.

Continuing to hone his skills in workshops, classes and apprenticeships with notable artists, Hlavka has had work exhibited at national shows including the National Sculpture Society and Cheyenne's Old West Museum Show, where he received the Gallery Choice award and first place.  The artist has additionally received awards from the Allied Artists of America.

A major monumental commission of note includes a commission sculpture representing the Oneida Indian Nation for the Smithsonian Institutes National Museum of the American Indian.  The sculpture portrays a larger than life bronze of Colonel Rick Rescorla.  Other monumental public installations include a larger than life sculpture of five running mustangs for a city in Utah, and Helen Keller for the State of Alabama.

Edward Hlavka is a member of the Allied Artists of America and a professional member of the National Sculpture Society.  His works are found in public and private collections as he has established a solid reputation for attention to detail and grace in figurative sculpture design.
