Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter, sculptor, teacher. Born on Aug. 29, 1874 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Edith was the daugher of Henry Garrfgues who introduced aseptic surgery to the U.S. After moving to San Francisco in 1914, she studied with Wm M. Chase in Carmel. Following her marriage in 1925 to Julian Hawthorne (son of Nathaniel), she settled into a studio-home in San Francisco at 1223 8th Avenue. She lived in Pasadena for a few years in the early 1930s. While there, she painted satyrs and nymphs in sunlit settings. Primarily a landscape painter, the influence of Chase is seen in her work. Mrs. Hawthorne died in San Francisco on Jan. 5, 1949. Member: Laguna Beach AA; Society of Independent Artists. Exh: Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1920; Battey Gallery (LA), 1920; CPLH, 1929 (solo); Society for Sanity in Art, 1940, 1945.
