Edward Shepard Hewitt, 1877-1962, architect, painter, etcher; born in Brooklyn New York, studied at Columbia, 1896-97, B.S. architecture, 1901. Studied in Paris and Italy between 1901-02 and began as a draughtsman in 1903. He painted independently from 1904 except for the years 1911-16 when he was a member of Hewitt & Bottomley. His work encompasses schools and residences, John Woods homes and Community Gardens, 65th and 66th street NYC; Porchester and Southampton High Schools, Long Island NY; Lake George High School, Lloyd Harbor NY, etc... Academician member of the National Academy of Design, member of the Salmagundi Club.
As a painter and an etcher, he had a few exhibitions, notably at the National Academy of Design. In 1941, the Harlow Keppel Galleries mounted a one man show of his work. His drypoints were exhibited at the New York Public Library in 1951. The Library of Congress purchased many of his etchings.
His style as a painter varies both in forms and techniques. His travels in Europe reflects his impressionistic tendencies. His early paintings toy with pointillism and fauvism. His later work is more vague in form and darker in mood. He painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and scenes from his imagination. Hewitt was a prolific artist, finishing several hundred canvasses in his life time. Most of his work resides in private collections. In his last years, he made Salisbury, Connecticut his home and many of his paintings of the hills there express his love of New England. | |
