This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Ellen Wales Hutchison    (1868 – 1937)

Ellen Wales, landscape and floral still life painter, was born in East Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of Edward and Georgia Wales. Her father worked in the printing business.  After her marriage, she settled in Hartford, Connecticut where she remained for the rest of her life.

She is known to have studied with Charles Ethan Porter, a black gentleman who studied in Paris, courtesy of Mark Twain, and who was also a charter member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art; George Thompson, who was noted for his Connecticut landscapes and nocturnes; and Guy Wiggins, who once told his son “painting is a wonderful hobby but a damned difficult way to make a living.”

Mrs. Hutchison was a member of the Connecticut Association of Fine Artists, the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, the New Haven Brush and Pen Club, and the American Federation of Artists.
