Born in San Francisco, California on April 18, 1884, Fernande Herrmann studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute (1903-04), California College of Arts and Crafts, Columbia University, privately with Henry Varnum Poor, and in Germany, France, and England.
A lifelong resident of San Francisco, she taught art at Lowell High School (1915-1930s) and was active in the local art scene until her death on June 23, 1948.
