This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Both a painter and sculptor, Fran Hulmes (last name pronounced "Humes") was born in Rome, New York in 1916.  She studied with Russ Palmer in 1948, Emile Gruppe in the early 1950's, Julius Allen in New York City, Stanley Turnbull, Ivan Olinsky at the NAD, and others. She was a member of the North Shore Art Association in Gloucester, the Painters and Sculptors Society of New Jersey and more. She also worked in Florida many winters.

Hulmes taught at the Rutherford Art Studio in New Jersey 1955-1985, then moved to New Lebanon, New York and maintained her own Hulmes Art Gallery there until about 2001, when she moved to the Southwest.  She exhibited in numerous shows over her long career including the Trenton Museum, Jersey City Museum, Montclair Museum in NJ, National Arts Club, Knickerbocker Artists, North Shore Art Association in Gloucester and Pittsfield Art League in Massachusetts, and Atelier 5 in Canaan and Canal Place Gallery in Little Falls, New York.

She was the winner of various awards and ribbons for her painting and sculptures, and is still active in her new home in Arizona.
