| Born in Illinois on May 20, 1841. Frances Slater migrated across the plains to California with her parents in 1851 and settled in Oakland. She studied painting with Wm Keith and at the local School of Design under Virgil Williams. Active in the San Francisco art scene, she was a member of the Sketch Club. As the wife of Dan W. Gelwicks, she lived in Oakland until her death on Feb. 20, 1915. Her work includes landscapes and still lifes of fruit and flowers.
