| An amateur portrait painter in crayon and thought to be the designer of the American flag while serving as a Congressman, Francis Hopkinson was born in Philadelphia. He lived there and in Bordentown, New Jersey. HIs reputation came primarily from his career as a lawyer, politician, musician and writer of political satire. He also created heraldic designs for official seals.
Hopkinson was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
