This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Frank Hazell (1883-1958)

He was an illustrator and landscape artist who worked in watercolor and oil.  His works were often pastoral scenes, but he also painted seaports and buildings of architectural interest.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1883, Mr. Hazell moved to New York City in 1910 to further his study at The Art Students’ League with Francis Luis Mora.  He lived and worked in New York for the rest of his life.  He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Water Color Society, the New York Water Color Club, the Society of Independent Artists and the Guild of American Painters.  In 1936 and 1937, Frank Hazell held the office of Treasurer of the American Water Color Society.

Hazell’s work has been included in exhibitions by the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy, the Society of Independent Artists, the Guild of American Painters, American Water Color Society, the New York Water Color Society, the Art Association of Newport and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club.

While Frank Hazell’s paintings were exhibited and sold nationwide, he worked in advertising in New York City.  He was an illustrator for Century Magazine and painted travel posters and brochures for The Outdoor Advertising Company.  He was commissioned to do paintings for Princeton University and West Point, as well as other institutions and Steamship Companies.  At the same time, he taught advertising art at The Grand Central School of Art.

Frank Hazell died on October 6, 1957 at the home of his daughter in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
