This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A painter, decorator and art administrator, Frank Hill Smith served as the Director of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Although he lived primarily in Boston, he also spent many years in Europe where he studied with Leon Bonnat in Paris and exhibited at the Paris Salon. Countries besides France that he visited were Holland, Belgium and Italy.

In the 1870s, his focus turned to decoration, and his decorative work is at the Windsor Hotel and the Opera House in Holyoke, Massachusetts. In 1876, he was a member of the Jury of Fine Arts at the Philadelphia Exposition.

Peter Falk, "Who Was Who in American Art"
Note submitted December 2004 from Christopher Janney, great grandson of the artist. Frank Hill Smith also used the name of Frank Hillsmith "as a suda-name". Fannie Hillsmith, who is his niece is still painting at age 93. She chose to make the "L" and "S" in her last name stick together.
