This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A contemporary video artist, Gary Hill, whose studio is in Seattle, Washington, focuses on relationships between electronic images and language.  Among his video titles are Soundings, Mediations, Around & About, Windows, Bathing and Sums and Differences.  He says his inspiration comes from many sources including books, a phrase or word he sees, and references to his own life including his daughter who, at age eight, he recorded reading text 'uniquely' from the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.  In 2001, he was an artist-in-residence at a neighborhood in Marseille, France, and had many experiences with Algerian immigrants that have been reflected in his video art.

Since 1973, Gary Hill has been working with video and audio.   He has a person with whom he regularly collaborates on software and mechanical engineering, and does much that is computer generated.  "A typical exhibition often includes multiple monitors with screens as large as 25 feet, sound and an interactive environment that is designed to bring the viewer into the experience." (Segal)

He began his video art career as a teenager in Woodstock, New York, and became involved with the Peoples Video Theatre, an entity that had set up in the area to create an interactive cable station.  He just knocked on the door, and from there was able to begin making recordings, which grew into him making sound from his own sculptures.  About that same time, he became interested in the welded sculpture of Anthony Parks, brother of a good friend who showed him how to do the processes.

During the summer when he was age 17, he attended the Art Students League in New York City and later returned there to study with Bruce Dorfman
