Gary Hume was born in Tenterden, Kent in England in 1962. He attended graduate school at Goldsmiths College, where he became part of the Young British Artists. His works at the Sensation exhibition were his “door paintings”: life-sized paintings depicting hospital doors. He showed his Water series at the 1999 Venice Biennale. Hume was nominated for a Turner prize in 1996, and in 2001 he was made a Royal Academician.
