This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in San Francisco, California on March 26, 1889.  Holl studied at the local Institute of Art in 1907-09.  In 1908 he received the Julian Medal while a student at the Art Institute in San Francisco, which included a scholarship for a year to study in Paris.  It is unclear, when and if he went to Paris at that time.

Following service in World War I, he lived in Paris for a couple of years and then became art director of the West Coast Fox Theaters.  He was a lifelong resident of his native city except during the 1920s when he lived in Los Angeles.  He died of a stroke at University of California Hospital on April 17, 1946.  He was a a brother of artist Albert Holl and cousin of artist Gertrude Holl.

The George Holl Collection of recipes, menus and cookbooks, some written in Latin and going back to the time of the Roman Empire is housed at the Biosciences Library at the University of California at Berkeley.
