George H Hughes was born in Paris France in 1863, at the time of the American Civil War (1861-1865), one of the most violent uprisings in American history.

Hughes grew up in the U.S. and as he matured, his desire to become a proficient artist evolved, and before 1900 he made the decision to cross the Atlantic Ocean with the intent to study art. He studied at the Academy Julian Paris under Professor J.P. Laurens, (1838-1921) and with famous academic painter Leon Bonnet (1833-1922).  Bonnet was considered the leading realist of the day. He also profited from the influence and teaching of Jean Joseph Benjamin Constant. (1845-1902)

Upon returning to the US, he settled in New York City and was able to make a livelihood as a portrait painter, receiving numerous commissions from prominent patrons. He later moved to Albany New York.

His works were installed in public buildings throughout the capitol area. Hughes was also a painter of various genre.  He exhibited at the Salon de Paris; the artist was a constituent of the Society of Independent Artists (1917-1944) which was chaperoned by John Sloan (1871-1951)  His works were also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy.  He also submitted a number of  works to The National Academy of Design.

George H. Hughes died in New York in 1932, at the onset of The Great Depression. He was sixty nine.

Born in Paris, France, George Hughes began his career as a portraitist in New York City for seven years and then settled in Albany, New York where he died in 1932. There his portraits can be found in many public buildings.

In Paris, he was a student of Jean Paul Laurens and Leon Bonnat.
