| Portrait and miniature painter, George Harrison Hite was born in Urbana, Ohio (1807). As early as 1835 he was working in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was described as a "native and self-taught artist of Kentucky." He was a resident of New York City between 1838 and 1863, he also visited New Orleans (1844), Cincinnati, and some parts of the South.
