This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Architect and artist, George T. Hobbs was born in Philadelphia to architect Isaac H. Hobbs and his wife Mary W. Hobbs. By 1866 George T. Hobbs had followed his father's lead and embraced the profession of architect, and by 1871 his participation in his father's office was acknowledged by changing the firm name to Isaac H. Hobbs & Son.

Concurrent with this participation in his father's office, however, was the younger Hobbs's continuing interest in painting. During the 1870s he studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and in 1887 he retired from the profession of architect in favor of that of painter, according to an announcement which appeared in the 16 May 1887 Philadelphia Real Estate Record and Builders Guide. In that announcement Hobbs stated that he had been studying painting for some nine years, including preparation at schools both in the United States and abroad.

Beginning in the Philadelphia city directory of 1879 George T. Hobbs had listed himself as architect and artist. By 1892, the first year when the Isaac H. Hobbs & Son firm disappears from the city directories, he has dropped the architect designation in favor of artist alone.
