| Gretchen M. (Woodruff) Houck was born February 27, 1906 in Bay City, Michigan, the daughter of Congressman Roy and Vera May (Hall) Woodruff. Her art education consisted of six years of study at the Windsor Academy in Windsor, Ontario under Sister Anthony and two years under Arthur Herzburg at the Detroit School of Art. A commercial illustrator, she was employed by the J.L. Hudson Department Store in Detroit for ten years.
Settling in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, Mrs. Houck was active in organizing the Eaton Rapids Art Association and the Lansing Art Association. She died August 1, 1981.
