Harriett Richards Harwood was born in Salt Lake City in 1870 the daughter of Dr. John Heber Richards, a student of philosophy and science. She showed artistic talent early in her life, eventually taking art lessons from James Taylor Harwood. He encouraged her to join him in Paris in 1888 to continue her art studies at the Académie Julian which she did, becoming one of the first women artists from Utah to study abroad.
