| Born in Stuttgart, Germany on March 2, 1882, Helmle studied at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe, Germany and in Italy. In 1905 he immigrated to NYC and in 1907 arrived in San Francisco. After studying at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute, he maintained a studio and decorated fashionable homes there. He married in 1924 and for seven years lived in the Santa Cruz Mountains. After settling in Los Angeles, he was commissioned by the Federal Art Project to decorate the chapel of Mission La Purisima near Lompoc, California. Helmle was active as an artist until his death in Los Angeles on July 6, 1966.
