| | Born in Iowa on April 26, 1877. Hawxhurst moved to San Francisco in 1892. After studying at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute, he got his first job in the art department of the Call. In 1903 he visited the art colony in Sierra Madre near Los Angeles and was so enamored he settled there. He studied painting with Jean Mannheim who taught at the Press Artists Ass’n. He died in Sierra Madre on Oct. 23, 1962.
