This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A portrait painter born in Cleveland, Ohio, Gustave Herkomer studied in Paris, London, and Munich and stayed in Europe for thirty-one years. In France and England, he earned a much-respected reputation for portraiture of prominent persons. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy of London.

In 1915, he arrived in California where he lived for the remainder of his life, first in San Francisco, then Auburn, and Sacramento where he died.

Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Portrait painter. Born in Cleveland, OH on Sept. 5, 1862 of German parents. Herkomer studied art in Paris, London, and Munich, and remained in Europe for the first 31 years of his career. While there he became well known for his portraits of prominent people which he exhibited at the Paris Salon and London's Royal Academy. About 1915 he arrived in San Francisco where his work was being shown at the PPIE, and remained in California for the rest of his life. He lived in Auburn until his death in Sacramento on Nov. 4, 1935. Member: Bohemian Club. Exh: Paris Salon, 1888; PPIE, 1915 (silver medal); SFAA, 1916; Bohemian Club, 1922 (portraits of George Sterling and Sir Hubert von Herkomer). Ber; Ben; AAA 1913; DR; WWAA 1938 (obit).
