Born in Philadelphia, Isabel Hickey was a teacher in the Philadelphia public schools. From 1920 to 1931, she exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy and in 1917 and 1918 with the Society of Independent Artists. She was a member of the Philadelphia Print Club.

Biography from Edward and Deborah Pollack Fine Art, LLC:
Isabel M. Hickey was born in 1872 in Philadelphia where she studied with William Merrit Chase and Howard Pyle. She also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Italy, France and Spain. She later traveled abroad several times to paint the lively genre scenes of France, most notably in Biarritz, Trouville and Deauville.

She was a member of many art clubs including the Philadelphia Art Alliance, The Fellowship of the PAFA, The Plastic Club (president), The American Artists Professional League,The American Federation of Art, The Brooklyn Society of Etchers, and the Print Club.

She often exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy, but also showed her works at the Society of Independent Artists in New York. She became a Director of Art for the Philadelphia school system for many years, and was also a member of the School Board of Philadelphia and president of the Art Teachers Association. Her mission in life was to "carry the message of beauty."
