The following is from American National Biography Online: Hart, Joel Tanner (11 Feb. 1810-2 Mar. 1877), sculptor, was born on a farm in Clark County, Kentucky, the son of Josiah Hart, a surveyor, hunter, and farmer, and Judith Tanner. He grew up in rural Clark County, where he received only about three years of elementary education.
