|  Son of a surgeon and obstetrician, the artist John E Hollen was born as Johann Eduard Hollen on October 6, 1814 in Bremen, Germany. At the age of 16 he traveled to Hamburg to begin his art training, and in the year 1834 moved to Altona to become apprentice with artist Johann Hamann, then journeyman to artist Hunteman in Bremerhaven.
In 1847, Hollen decided to migrate to the United States. Upon arrival to the United States, he worked for artist F. Swoll as a fresco painter. He also worked for Freidrich Schultz on decoration for the German-Reformed Church in New York and in 1849 he worked for John Stephanson painting ornaments, flowers and figurines.
Hollen exhibited at the American Institute in 1856 and the National Academy from 1858-1862. He was considered to be a "fancy" painter as well as a decorator.
On October 16, 1881 he suffered a stroke and died 9 days later. He is buried in Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in Queens, NY with his second wife Meta Catarina.
